The guide
Contemporary art in Budapest: the complete guide
Updated October 2026 · numbers counted live from the archive
Budapest has 119 contemporary art spaces you can visit today: 88 galleries, photo galleries and project spaces and 14 museums and institutions, across 13 districts. The scene is denser and more exciting than it looks: galleries work in courtyards, upstairs flats and side streets, without shop windows. This guide tells you on one page where to start, when to go and what to expect.
Where: the three gallery quarters
The Pest inner core (Districts V–VI–VII) holds 48 spaces, all walkable. Three neighbourhoods form the backbone:
- Falk Miksa utca and Lipótváros (District V) – 29 spaces: the classic gallery quarter behind Parliament, commercial galleries, antiques and a few project spaces. Walk →
- Andrássy Avenue and Terézváros (District VI) – 18 spaces: the internationally active galleries (acb, Deák Erika, Viltin, INDA), photography (Capa Center, Mai Manó House) and the University of Fine Arts. Walk →
- Bartók Béla út (District XI, Buda) – 13 spaces along a single avenue: the younger, café-and-gallery side of Buda. Walk →
Every district on its own page: I. · II. · III. · IV. · V. · VI. · VII. · VIII. · IX. · XI. · XII. · XIII. · XIV.
Museum or gallery? Both, for different reasons
The big institutions – Ludwig Museum (contemporary, District IX), Műcsarnok (Heroes' Square), Hungarian National Gallery (Castle), Kiscelli Museum – Municipal Gallery (Óbuda), Capa Center and Mai Manó House (photography) – are the sure thing: open at weekends, ticketed, with large shows. The galleries are the discovery: free, small, the gallerist is often in the room, and you see what is being made now. A good day: a museum in the morning, a gallery quarter in the afternoon.
When: the weekend problem
This is the city's most important unspoken rule: most commercial galleries open Tuesday to Friday, 2–6 pm, and are closed at weekends – exactly when visitors have time. Museums open Tuesday to Sunday and close on Monday. That is why we keep a separate, weekly updated page on what's open at the weekend, from verified hours only.
What it costs
Galleries and project spaces are free. Museum tickets are typically in the 2,500–4,500 HUF range with student and senior discounts; check the institution's site for the exact price. Openings (usually Thursday or Friday evening) are public and free – the best way to meet the scene.
Fairs and art weeks
The year's rhythm: Art Market Budapest in autumn, Central Europe's largest international contemporary fair (October); Budapest Art Week in spring with open galleries and programmes; Art Weekend Budapest on the first weekend of Advent. During these weeks galleries open longer and at weekends. Check the organisers' sites for this year's dates.
Artists to know
The archive ties 228 artists to Budapest spaces and documents 240 exhibitions. The Hungarian neo-avant-garde (Dóra Maurer, Imre Bak, Ilona Keserü, Miklós Erdély, Tibor Hajas) is held in international collections; we follow the young generation through the Esterházy Art Award, the Derkovits scholarship and the Leopold Bloom Award lists.
